Free water is that which easily escapes wood by evaporation. Bound water is more tightly held within the wood's cell walls.
When hearing this term for the first time, I was immediately struck with the beauty of that concept. Everything in life is free, yet bound at the same time. We are free in the United States but bound to the laws of our land. We have free will as human beings, yet our own moral structures bound us to certain codes of what's right and wrong. Free and Bound is a term that can be used to express so much, which makes it the perfect label for my creative project.

On a daily basis, I was introduced to grain patterns and colors within wood I had never encountered. While time and space is always a limitation, the plethora of wood I have to work with has led to a point where my craft is perfected enough to share it with the world.
My signature carvings are all mushroom inspired. As the fruiting body of fungus, their natural variation of color, structure, and size are endless. Wood has an equally impressive variation of patterns and colors and blending the two together, is something I can hardly imagine ever getting old. Due to the composition of wood, every time a curve is made in a piece, the grain displays itself differently. This makes the flowing form of a mushroom, my favorite way to show the beauty inside that which was once a living organism, rooted in the ground and breathing in the air.
